Trunks recalls his time spent training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber with Vegeta. This cel was used in the transition into and out of this memory. Trunks’ memories of this training period were not fond, to say the least. Vegeta majorly failed as a parent here, but Trunks is still determined to win his father’s favor. As the flashback ends, Trunks turns to watch Vegeta fighting against Cell and delivers this line:

“Father, one day I will prove myself to you. Maybe then you’ll understand. All of these dangers that you’re so eager to face, you don’t have to face them alone.”

Aaaaand cut to Vegeta laughing maniacally… poor Future Trunks. Thankfully, Vegeta learns to be a much better father over the course of the series >.< This is cel is part of the maniacal laughter scene. He’s playing around with Cell since his power boost to SSJ2 has made him significantly stronger than the still Imperfect Cell. Gotta love that sassy smirk.

The animation was done in sort of an experimental, flowing way as Vegeta dodges back and forth. Cels have multiple exposures and linger on the screen in a way that makes the motion sort of dream like. This cel was one of the overlays that were also used, held on screen in the background as he dodges around. It was an interesting technique that maybe wasn’t all that successful, but it’s nice to see them trying new things. And the cel as a stand alone is fantastic.

Unfortunately, this cel came veeeeery stuck to an unmatching vibrant orange BG and the colors had begun to bleed. Based on advice from other collectors, I separated the cel and BG best I could and now I have to look into removing the stuck paint that lingered after separation. No damage was done to the cel when removing the BG, but the BG has definitely seen better days. At least it won’t continue to bleed through this way though, as his hair was showing some very light orange coloring, though I took me several looks before I even noticed it. He shall be my project over the next few months, but even with the bleeding issue, this cel is gorgeous and I really lucked out getting this one :3
